October 2007 Newsletter
Dear Students,

With the onset of the '07 Advanced Studies program and the imminent visit from our teachers Angela Farmer and Victor Van Kooten, the studio seems to be buzzing with new energy and excitement. This energy has inspired us wash everything, which is quite the job—blankets, bolsters, mats, curtains, carpets...everything. Oh, and we installed new cubbies and re-painted the changing area. It's that good-old September back-to-school feeling. This month, we would like to extend a special welcome to this year's gang of teachers in training who we are so excited to meet within the cycle of teaching and learning. Lastly, check out the fun new web pages on our site:

The Breathing Body: An Untraining in Yoga with Angela Farmer and Victor Van Kooten
($325 full workshop)

  • Saturday, Oct. 6, 11am-2pm and 3pm-5pm: Twists and Spirals
  • Sunday, Oct. 7, 11am-2pm and 3pm-5pm: Roots and Wings

We are delighted to be hosting our teachers, Angela and Victor, for the 5th consecutive year! Through a variety of traditional Hatha poses as well as meditation, breath work and experimentation, Angela and Victor will guide students into working with the natural flow of gravity to find both a sense of rootedness and connectedness as well as a sense of fluid movement and expansiveness in their bodies. On Saturday, in Twists and Spirals, Angela and Victor will illustrate how, within the external twists, students can use the inner spirals of the body to create a more quiet receptiveness. And on Sunday, in Roots and Wings, they will work with students on gaining a softening of the muscles or outer body, a dropping down with gravity, so they can begin to experience the simultaneous upward rising of the inner body.

Learning the Ropes with Betty Roi
    Sunday, Sep 30, 2-5pm ($65)

Rope work, or yoga korunta, is a very dynamic and playful part of the Iyengar tradition of yoga. Ropes help tremendously in building agility and strength of body and mind. In this workshop we will focus on learning how to incorporate the ropes in your yoga practice. By transforming our relationship with gravity, the ropes assist us in focusing on specific parts of the body, refining the dynamics within a pose, and going beyond our habitual limits. We will explore a variety of asanas. Be prepared to have fun and be challenged. These workshops are open to all levels and teachers who may want to teach rope work.

Monthly Extended Practice with Karl Erb
    First Sundays, 2-5pm: Oct 7, Nov 4 ...($45)

Come together for a monthly extended practice to deepen your experience and move your practice to unforeseen levels. Each class will include vinyasa warm-up, headstand, shoulder stand and an extended Savasana, or Yoga Nidra meditation.

    Extended Practice with Tony Briggs
    Saturday, Oct 27, 3:00-6:00pm ($35 drop-in); pre-registration is required.

Tony's extended practice will leave you feeling fully adjusted, worked through to core, and surprisingly upright and balanced. Please join us for this thorough 3-hour class in Tony's signature Naga Yoga style—a practice that promises to include standing poses, hip openers, backbends, inversions, and twists.

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable." -Hellen Keller
