March 2007 Newsletter
Greetings Students,

We are happy to announce the arrival of the littlest member of The Yoga Loft family, Xander Lyon Roniger, born to Geoffrey and Taylor Roniger, at 10:18pm on Saturday, February 17th (9lbs. 1oz., 22"!). Mamma, baby, and Daddy are all healthy, happy, and mind-blowingly in awe the magic of being alive. We thank you all for your great love and support during Xander's passage into life.

As we consider the many months of gestation, and then the intense journey through labor and birth that we all made in one way or another, we can't help but acknowledge the incredible capacity of the human body, and the innate intelligence that lies therein. Being close to the process also reminds us of the vast complexity and magnitude of a soul's journey—where it comes from, how it's shaped, what it means to inhabit a human body.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Yoga Asanas and the Emotions: Creative Exploration of the Body Self with Sophia Reinders. Ph.D., MFT
Saturday, Mar 3, 12noon-4:30pm & Sunday, Mar 4, 12:30-5pm
Our body is our most immediate home on earth. It is the receptacle of our stories, sculpted in the flesh of our being. In this workshop you will practice asanas, kinesthetic awareness meditation, and breathing. In addition, you will give symbolic expression to your kinesthetic-emotional-imaginal experiences encountered in the body through guided imagery, active imagination, painting and creative writing.

Yoga for Women: PMS and the Menstrual Cycle with Athena Pappas
Sunday, Mar 11, 2-5pm ($45)
Have you ever felt depressed, anxious, tired, bloated, irritable, had headaches or insomnia pre-menstrually? Do you suffer from cysts, fibroids or problematic periods — severe cramping, excessive flow, long or short monthly cycles? In this workshop you will learn an appropriate practice to do during menstruation. We will also go through a sequence designed to relieve symptoms of PMS. Problems with menstrual cycles will also be addressed as well as how correct practice through out the month can support hormonal balance and a healthy reproductive system. This workshop is highly recommended for those attending yoga classes regularly and is open to women of all levels of experience.

The Anatomy of Asana Series with Sabine Kuehner: Shoulders, Shoulders, Shoulders.
Sunday, Mar 11, 2-5pm ($60)
Tight shoulders. Weak shoulders. Injured shoulders. Flexible shoulders. Strong shoulders. If you are wondering how to work with shoulder issues in your asana practice, this is the workshop for you. During this afternoon, Sabine will provide a practical understanding of how the shoulder girdle works—what is the arm and shoulder position—in all types of asana. She will combine a little theoretical anatomy within a practice that includes standing poses, seated poses, twists, inversions, and backbends.

Last Sundays: An Ongoing Immersion Practice with Patricia Sullivan
Sunday, Mar 18, 11am-2pm ($40)
An accomplished sculptor, Patricia's classes are imaginative, exploratory and continuously evolving. She emphasizes process rather than end result, curiosity rather than "knowingness," and always brings to her classes a feeling that yoga is not only a vehicle for self-transformation, it's fun. Inside a practice that works to develop strength and flexibility, Patricia brings her life-long experience and love for alignment and kineseology, and its resulting aesthetic and healing potential.

Working With Obstacles on the Yogic Path with Sarah Powers
Sunday, March 25, 12-4:30pm ($70)
As we study and practice yoga, we are learning to inhabit our bodies, hearts and minds in an authentic way. Naturally, our daily yoga practice becomes the environment where we restore and enhance our energy, but it can also serve as the vehicle for acknowledging and opening to patterns of resistance that we habitually struggle with or have split off from in ourselves. These emotional afflictions obscure our compassionate awareness and are the source of our suffering. It is essential that we bring them onto the yogic path and work with them skillfully.

Introduction to Yoga: A Monthly Beginner's Class with Athena Pappas
Sunday, Mar 31, 2pm-4pm ($30)
In this extended beginners class students will learn to do basic yoga postures. This class will provide students new to the practice with a foundation for any style of yoga they choose to pursue. Athena will teach the poses with emphasis on correct action and alignment, using props when necessary. This is an opportunity to work closely with an instructor who will ensure a safe and enjoyable introduction to the practice of yoga. Appropriate for anyone with little or no yoga experience. It is not necessary to attend more than one class.

Yoga: Asana, Pranayama and Meditation, an Explanation with Chase Bossart
Four Mondays, April 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th, 5:30-7:30pm ($75)

A deeper backbend may change our mood, but to effect lasting change in the way we feel, communicate, behave and think, we need to apply yoga principles in our daily lives along with our consistent practice. In fact, to go deeper in our practice, we need to understand: the principles underlying why we practice; the relationship between body, breath, mind and our behavior, especially our habits; and how yoga understands the mechanism of conscious change. Each session of this 4 class series will include a presentation of how to integrate yoga principles into daily living and a yoga practice (incl. asana, pranayama and meditation) designed to move toward integrating the concepts covered. All levels welcome.

"Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison of selfishness by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation." -Albert Einstein
