January 2008 Newsletter
Dear Students,

Happy 2000Great to All! Is it just us, or did the dawning of this NewYear seem to sweep in with a giant gust of something swirling with fresh energy, surprise, and change? And if that feels totally inflated and absurd to you, not to worry. Something is bound to feel fresh, new, and alive at some point in 2008. Perhaps even politics, and America itself, could feel that way. (Let's pray.) But rather than getting so excited that we forget where we're coming from- one day at a time. Continuing to breath and continuing to explore such mysteries as fascinating as Downward Facing Dog. We are looking forward to a great year full of excellent teaching and radiant learning. Thank you to all teachers and to all students who so generously give to the life and community at Yoga Loft.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS & SERIES

Practicing Inversions Safely with Geoffrey Roniger
Saturday, Jan 19, 12:30-6pm ($125)
Inversions: increase circulation in the head and brain, stimulate the pineal and pituatary glands, relieve strain and fatigue in legs and feet, drain and circulate fluids, aid in digestion and elimination, keep us young and vital. Inversions are understood as the cornerstone Asana practice. Yet many students find themselves missing some of the central pieces of instruction. As we turn ourselves upside down and ask our heads and hands to becomeweight-bearers, we encounter a whole new physical and emotional dynamic with ourselves. Need we say more?

Beginning Back Care Series with Kathy Alef
8-Week Series: Thursdays, 10:00-11:30am, Jan 24- Mar 13 ($210)
This series is designed specifically for those with back challenges. Each class will progress methodically-- from taking care of the back when experiencing pain to building strength when pain is finally relieved. Attention will be given to postural alignment and safe ways of improving flexibility in hips and shoulders.

Watching the breath as it is highlights the freedom, or restriction, of our very being, and illuminates the ultimate condition of our mental health. The practice hold the potential to help us shift our deeply ingrained physical, mental, emotional patterns. Patricia will discuss and explore different breathing techniques and lead the class through a meditation practice.

"How surely gravity's law, strong as an ocean current, takes hold of even the smallest thing and pulls it toward the heart of the world/This is what the things can teach us—to fall, patiently to trust our heaviness. Even a bird has to do that before he can fly." -Rainer Maria Rilke
