February 2007 Newsletter
Greetings Students,

Transpersonal psychologist Ken Wilbur says, "Few of us have lost our minds, but many of us have long ago lost our bodies." When thoughts begin to take on a quality of being separate from the body, this dangerous, and quite uncomfortable, state of disembodiment takes hold, guiding us toward the well of sickness, injury, addiction, depression. Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of yoga practice is that we begin to live our lives in a more embodied way. Instead of yielding to accept the loss of the body, we work to spread consciousness from the crown of the head to the tips of the toes. We begin to listen to and understand the language of the body.

Pranayama with Anne Saliou: A 6-Week Series
Fridays mornings, Feb 16 - Mar 23, 7:30-8:45am ($90 for 6 weeks)
For the mystics, for the Yogis, the Breath is the essence, the very source of life. The breath is the link between the body and the mind, and by controlling the Breath the mind is brought under control. This workshop is an introduction to the art of Pranayama, the fourth limb of Yoga. Pranayama is an inward journey that starts from the state of Savasana and the mindful observation of the breath and takes us to the practice of consciously channeling the energy of the breath.

Sunday, Feb 25, 11am-2pm ($40)
An accomplished sculptor, Patricia's classes are imaginative, exploratory and continuously evolving. She emphasizes process rather than end result, curiosity rather than "knowingness," and always brings to her classes a feeling that yoga is not only a vehicle for self-transformation, it's fun. Inside a practice that works to develop strength and flexibility, Patricia brings her life-long experience and love for alignment and kineseology, and its resulting aesthetic and healing potential.

It is not necessary to attend more than one class.

ADVANCING COURSES WITH RAMANAND PATEL

When Ramanand Patel was 12, his father introduced him to yoga philosophy and asana, and he learned early on to embrace yoga with a childlike joyousness and delight. In 1968, after coming across a few other yoga teachers, Ramanand became a student of Guruji (Yogacharya Shri B.K.S. Iyengar) who profoundly influenced the strength, discipline, deepening, understanding, confidence and enthusiasm of his asana and pranayama practice. Then in 1984 Ramanand intensified his pursuit of truth and knowledge by studying Vedanta philosophy under H.H. Swami Dayananda Saraswati. He also considers J. Krishnamurti to be a major influence on his thinking. Ramanand's extensive, distinct, and lifelong yoga experiences inform both his yoga practice and his teaching style. He is recognized and respected internationally and many in the yoga community regard him as one of the world's foremost yoga instructors. Ramanand actively encourages both learning and sharing of ideas amongst his students and peers. The Yoga Loft is delighted to have Ramanand Patel as part of the Advanced Studies Program.

Accessing the Pelvic Floor: The Bhandas, Chakras and Nadis with Ramanand Patel
Saturday, Feb 17, 2007: 1pm-6pm ($175)
This afternoon with Ramanand is part of the Advanced Studies/Teacher Training Program but is open to all students. In this module, Ramanand will introduce students to the theoretical and physical aspects of the internal structure of the body and will guide them in accessing the inner channels in order to support the opening of the denser layers of the body.

Integrating the Practice into Life with Ramanand Patel
Saturday, Feb 24, 2007: 1pm-6pm ($175)
While many of us are dedicated to a practice that might even be daily, it is often difficult to bring "regular" life into the practice and to bring the practice into our everyday behaviors. Ramanand will talk about how the different parts of the yoga practice feed one another and how they can be integrated into the students' way of living, even in a city. This afternoon with Ramanand is part of the Advanced Studies/Teacher Training Program but is open to all students.
