Created by Joseph Pilates, this technique is the product of a lifelong observation of the human body and its natural functioning. The Pilates method combines the best of Western and Eastern traditions, blending the mind and body and viewing them as a unit working in complete harmony with one another. From the East, the approach brings in exercise as a path to calmness and centeredness, with an emphasis on stretching and limbering. The Western influence emphasizes motion, muscle tone and strength.
The Pilates method follows carefully laid out principles based on a well-constructed philosophical and theoretical foundation. As such, it combines a set of well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence done with diaphragmatic breathing.
The focal point of the Pilates method is the center, or abdominal region. In fact, the prime physical result of practicing the method is a strong yet long and supple center. This type of core strength translates into better posture, less fatigue, and lowered incidence of back pain and injury.
Pilates is suitable for every body and can be performed with or without equipment. Mat (floor) classes utilize some props but no equipment. There are some classes offered that are designed to utilize apparatus that was developed for rehabilitative purposes. Currently, the Pilates offering at The Yoga Mat is in the form of Mat work only. Pilates can also be offered in a group setting or on an individual basis. Whether in a group setting or in a private session, Pilates is highly personalized. In a group setting, students are closely observed and receive individual attention. The Yoga Loft offers Mat classes for groups. Call 626-LOFT to inquire about private sessions.
