Beginner-Level Iyengar Classes
Beginner Iyengar classes provide a gentle introduction to the Iyengar
practice and a good foundation for beginning any style of yoga.
These classes focus on the basic beginner poses with an emphasis on
alignment, body awareness and breath.
Note that there are no prerequisites for these classes and absolutely no
prior yoga experience or fitness level is expected of students coming. These
beginner classes are well suited for students with physical limitations (though
not suggested for persons with serious injuries), or those students that feel
they are not fit enough or flexible enough for yoga.
Also note that while these are actual hands-on, physical experiences for
students, classes will also include some discussion of the theory of yoga and why
asanas are performed as well as detailed instruction on the proper use of
props-blocks, bolsters, and straps-for modifying poses. See class times ...
Beginner-Level Vinyasa Classes
The Yoga Loft also offers Beginner Vinyasa or Flow classes. Flow classes
synchronize the breath with movement so are fast past compared to Iyengar. These
Beginner-level classes are geared toward students new to flow-style yoga and
accommodate the learning process by being slower in pace than other levels of
Vinyasa offered.
Flow classes are considered challenging classes and poses (asanas) will be
shown as they are practiced in their traditional way but modifications and
adjustments will be made so that everyone attending the class will feel challenged
yet comfortable practicing them. As these are on-going, progressive classes,
the pace will be dictated by those attending the class rather than by any goals
set by the instructor. Every class will conclude with a period of deep
relaxation. See class times ...
Restorative Yoga
For those whose physical activity has been limited or who have been side-lined by injury but are interested in beginning a yoga practice or reviving a practice, Restorative yoga classes are a good starting point. No prior yoga experience is necessary for Restorative yoga.
Restorative yoga involves poses that are calming and nurturing. As such, it is valuable for people recovering from illness or injury or for those that are feeling physically or emotionally stressed. Because it allows for total relaxation, a 90-minute restorative yoga class provides a potent from of recovery and rejuvenation for everything from the muscles and bones to the heart and nervous system.
Restorative yoga is also an ideal way for persons who are completely new to yoga to ease into the practice as restorative poses are modifications of classical poses but make use of props (ropes, blocks, bolsters, etc.) to reduce the need for a person's muscles/musculature to provide support or alignment.
